FOR A EUROPE OF THE PEOPLE

YES TO A HUMANIST EUROPE OF SOLIDARITY AND NONVIOLENCE

2nd of June 2005

Twice within four days the population of a European country has said NO to the European Constitution.

The victory of the NO in the Netherlands is the victory of disobedience and the rebellion of the population, the rejection of a violent, liberal, antidemocratic and discriminating system that only serves financial interests. This voting undeniably reveals the abyss that separates the legitimate aspirations of the peoples from the petty and vile market interests of the political leaders.

This courageous and daring choice does not reflect the rejection of the European construction but rather the will to build a Europe of solidarity, diversity, tolerance, peace and non-violence. This vote of the Dutch population was a NO to the Europe of banks and a YES to the Europe of the peoples.

This act of resistance is the second step, after France, which will liberate the voices of the other peoples of Europe that have been confiscated by the established powers. Because instead of saying that 8 countries of Europe have approved that constitution, it should really be said that 8 governments have imposed that constitution without consulting their populations. And this is also valid for the Spanish government that carried out a campaign of disinformation the like of which has never been seen before and made the population vote for a treaty that they did not know.

Therefore the European Humanist Regional reconfirms that Europe is ripe for a Constitution that, inspired by the deep humanist roots of our culture, sustains the construction of a Europe that makes its contribution to the future Universal Human Nation. We want a true European Constitution, with strong and coherent humanist references, not only in its Preface, but also in all its articles.

Therefore the Humanist European Regional demands:
Free and quality healthcare and education for every one;
The right to vote and to be voted in all elections for all the people who live in Europe;
Co-management of workers and reinvestment of profit within businesses;
The right to a dignified life, with or without a job;
A true policy of Peace based on active non-violence;
The diversity and the equality of rights and opportunities;
A law of political responsibility;
A direct and real democracy.

The European Humanist Regional congratulates and thanks all those, individual citizens and progressive organised forces, who engaged themselves with humbleness, meaning and generosity in a referendum campaign to make their voice understood, in spite of all the counter attacks of contempt, blackmail, manipulation and trickery.

This event must be interpreted as an awakening of the peoples and the growing expression of the wish for real democracy in the world.

So, after this second deed of coherence, what really matters is to bring change where we are, by denouncing and resisting all injustice, violence and discrimination in our life, in our work environment, in our communities and in our neighbourhood. Let us join our forces with those around us, in order to nourish this great wind of change that is rising.
