Open Letter
Hungarian Television failed to give equal opportunities
27th September 2006.
The European Regional of the Humanist International denounces the fact that the Hungarian Humanist Party’s list leader in the Budapest local elections has been excluded from the Hungarian public service television’s debate between the list leaders. The debate was held between only six candidates out of nine. The candidates of Budapest Tarsasag, the Centrum Party and the Humanist Party were not invited to the debate, nor was their existence even mentioned.
We consider this censorship on behalf of the Hungarian National TV as a clear case of manipulation of the Hungarian people and and a violation of basic democratic and electoral principles such as the principle of equal opportunities and the principle of representation of minority opinions. Thus, the Hungarian TV is contributing to the already existing crisis of the Hungarian democracy and to the lack of trust of the Hungarian people in their political institutions.
We urge the Hungarian national TV to broadcast before the elections at least interviews with the list leaders of the HP and the other two excluded parties, repairing thus the damage done. Only by knowing the proposals of each group Hungarian people can freely express their choice.
The European Region of the Humanist International declares it’s commitment to a worldwide non-violent struggle to overcome the existing formal democracies by real democracies.
We hope that our demand finds the attention it deserves.
With kind regards
