Weapons of mass-stupidity

press release - 1 November 2005

How can it be that in a time when the public transport system is falling apart, education standards for boys are dropping and health care depends on your postcode, this government is thinking to spend £20 billion on a replacement nuclear deterrent?

60 years ago in Japan it was proved to the world that nuclear bombs should never be used again.  Yet Tony Blair believes that an "independent nuclear deterrent" is "an important part of our defence".

What is this ego-trip that he is on?  Does he have to have the best weapons in order to prove something to the rest of the world or to himself?  How did he ever get accepted as a member of the Labour Party?

The cold war ended in the 90s and it is now time that Britain faced up to this new reality and took steps to relieve itself of the horrible burden of maintaining these weapons of mass-destruction.

In international matters, the Humanist Party, in accordance with our membership of the Humanist International, proposes the following:

  1. Adherence to a policy of non-alignment.
  2. The signing of permanent peace treaties in zones of conflict, while, secondly, continuing the negotiations regarding specific points, leaving the supervision of the zone of conflict in the hands
  3. of the United Nations, and in extreme cases submitting the decision to the international courts for resolution.
  4. Progressive and proportional demilitarisation of countries in a zone of conflict and of the super-powers, even though they might not act directly in the zone of conflict.

In domestic matters, the Humanist Party questions the values that this government bases its policies on. It
is clear that the agenda of this government is very far away from responding to the needs of the people. Increasing fear of crime, insecurity at work, threats of terrorism, lack of participation in the democratic process, increased discrimination of those who are not white Christians and alienation of the youth of this country are all indicators of a system that does not care in the least for human beings.  It is clear that whatever doesn’t make a profit must be ditched or privatised for this government.

On the other hand a growing number of people in this country are realising that this is not sustainable.
These people recognise the contribution that each individual and culture can make to UK society; they recognise the potential in everyone; they know that violence is no solution to end the violence.  The future that is desired is not the one where people are competing against each other in a desperate attempt to have more money than their neighbours and friends.  It is not the one where prozac, alcohol and drugs are the only way to get through life.

The Humanist Party promotes a future free of violence and discrimination and a future where each human being, due to the very fact of being born, can enjoy a good standard of living.

The Humanist Party proposes:

  1. The withdrawal of the UK’s nuclear capabilities and the elimination of all our weapons of mass destruction
  2. Increased investment into other areas of domestic policy, namely; health, education and public transport
  3. Increased investment in areas of international support to developing countries based on the principle that only increased global social justice will lead to a reduction in international terror and violence
  4. The adherence to the CND campaign for “No Trident Replacement!.
