During the last week, we have seen a terrible escalation of violence in Palestina, Iraq and Ossetia, ended with the massacre of the children in the school in Beslan. The pictures shown on television and newspapers are almost unbereable and each of us wonders which horror we will have to see next.

 

The situation seems hopeless, but actually this is not true: what is needed is a radical change in international and internal politics, based on the awareness that peace will not result from a violent approach to violence.

 

The politics the Russians are carrying on in Cecenia, the Americans in Iraq and the Israelis in Palestina is based on oppression and injustice and can only feed hate and violence, in a neverending spiral. The terrorists who massacre hundreds of children in a school are not different from the pilots who kill them dropping bombs from a plane or the soldiers who shoot from a tank.

 

Our proposal is simple: all who are invading territories of others should withdraw immediately and comply with the resolutions and recommendations of the United Nations.

 

But this is not enough and all over the world people who refuse every kind of violence have understood it: we also have to reject violence as a mean to face and resolve conflicts and choose non violence at every level, from the personal one, in our family and relations, to the national and international ones. This is the only way to break the spiral of horror that threats to cancel the humanity.
