Background of the Humanist European Regional

The activities of the International Humanist begin with its first Congress, in Florence in January of 1989, with the attendance of humanist party representatives from five continents.

Already at the 1993 International Humanist Congress, it was clear that "the crisis that was detected in the world did not only include the political environment, but that it reached into all aspects of human life", and it was evident that there was a need to take the discussion and the proposal of a transforming action in a humanist direction to an environment much greater than the strictly political.

Given the situation of regionalization, the Humanist International decided to organize itself in Regionals that, acting in different zones of the planet, allow for the gathering and coordination of persons and organizations that converge towards humanism and non-violence.

Thus, in 1999 humanists from different countries in Europe met in Madrid, formed a European Humanist Regional and defined a common program, setting positions with respect to themes such as capital and labor, real democracy, the right to health and education, immigration, freedom of choice and the rejection of war, with the aspiration of the union of European peoples as an intermediate stage on the road towards a Universal Human Nation.

In October, 2003, in Prague, with the presence of more than 120 representatives from the 14 European countries, the Humanist European Regional met again. There was a double objective for this meeting: to open participation up to not only political organizations and to produce an ideological positioning that would give clear references and inspire common actions as a response to the conflicts, injustice and violence.
