PUBLIC DECLARATION OF THE EUROPEAN HUMANIST REGIONAL OF THE HUMANIST INTERNATIONAL REGARDING THE REFERENDUM IN VENEZUELA
THE EUROPEAN HUMANIST REGIONAL WOULD VOTE “NO” ON THE 15th AUGUST

The European Humanist Regional, a grouping of diverse political parties and social organizations of Europe, manifests its support for the revolutionary process led by President Hugo Chávez Frías.
Throughout its history Europe has had a violent attitude as a coloniser and violator of peoples in Latin-America and in other regions of the world. Now a new non-violent reference expresses itself through the voice of humanists united in the European Humanist Regional.
We want the Venezuelan people to know that they are not alone in their struggle for a world of solidarity, a world where the human being is the central value, a world that leaves the violence in human prehistory and enters a new historical moment and moves toward the "Universal Human Nation".
We denounce the complicity of the majority of the European communications media that has joined the campaign to discredit and degrade the popular vote that in its moment elected Hugo Chávez Frías.
We observe in the revolutionary process of Venezuela a demonstration effect that opens possibilities of transforming formal democracies (hijacked by international financial capital), into real democracies. And we also recognize in the mechanism of abrogative referendum an important tool of real democracy.
Surely on this path toward transformation, the Venezuelan people will find many difficulties and will have to resist violence coming from many different sectors.
A non-violent society with solidarity, a real and participative democracy, a health system for all, free access to education, a quality life for all its members, is the kind of society to which all humanists of the world aspire. In that sense, the European Humanist Regional offers all the necessary collaboration so that those objectives are achieved through the methodology of active non-violence.
